Bruised Rib
July 27th, 2025 — Rib
I’m in so much pain, and I don’t know if I’m going to survive. If I don’t, I leave Nanna in Teacher Ott’s care. My equipment and charms I leave to the Magaambya.
From what I remember it started with having to clear some pests out of a storage room: little fey critters whose powers of misfortune could be limited by wearing silver bells. They seemed to respect or fear me enough to follow my instructions, so we packaged them up in a box with some holes for air and dropped them off in the jungle outside town. Hopefully all the accidents that happened in their wake weren’t too bad. The critters said they were working for someone else, and that there was a scary ghost involved too. This didn’t bode well, so we made sure to inform Teacher Ott.
We then had to help protect the storage room against them coming back: gathering a bunch of ingredients to prepare oils for a ritual. The most challenging by far was the mushroom oil. We had to venture deep into the jungle to find them, and once we did, we were ambushed by a fungal monster that stood the same height as my companions, releasing spores to confuse its prey. Thankfully there were enough of us to take it down, sparing us from the same fate as whoever that poor soul had previously been. Got some treasure for our trouble too. We managed to make use of the local community once we were back in town to get the bones necessary for the ritual. Even with a place this big, people can still work together. It’s obvious that the Magaambya is respected here.
We were then able to master the ritual which should keep less powerful fey like those critters out of the storeroom, and were then tasked with relating stories to the other students. I decided to recount dealing with the critters in the storeroom the way a lorekeeper would teach cubs: basic, but I guess I wanted to show that I’m mastering those basics.
Now that we’d performed tasks for all of the clans of the academy, Teacher Ott summoned us for an important meeting the next dawn. I figured it would be some kind of test, but what awaited us was nothing but shame. We were ambushed by a fey much stronger than those critters we’d dealt with earlier. These are fey; we should have expected some kind of retaliation and taken further precautions. I tried, but the bastard cut us down one after another. I held out the longest, and the last thing I remember as I fell is seeing Meera fleeing to find help. Not brave, but smart. Could it really by that I’ve learned nothing from what happened with Hibiscus? I’m so sorry. Whatever comes next, I’m ready to accept the consequences…
