Session 12 - Tried to do better

August 8th, 2026 — Meera

Dear Diary, I’m sorry I haven’t written enough recently, but there has been a lot of fun stuff to do at school the last couple of weeks. Let me write down the last three noteworthy events.

We got an assignment from Teacher Ot. A nearby village was having problems with insects eating their harvest. We went there and met with the headwoman Arido. After our lessons with the Angraffs we tried to do better. Note my writing down ‘tried to do better’. We investigated first, found 3 mounds of army ant swarms. We went back to the village. Took some preparations to be less noticeable and attack the mounds from an ambush with the big rocks lying around. I mean, so far so good, right? Except that we should have waited for the next day so we could have prepared the right spells against ant swarms. We did survive the fight, by the skin of our teeth. Next time we have to do even better…

Finally after making some progress in my studies I’ve found some time to start cleaning up the Tree Stump Library. It’s a lot of hard work, but very satisfying to find the beautiful library back under all the grime. Recently I heard that some students have a “library coffee club” or something like that, and that they were miffed about not being included. Since they were not called the “library cleaning club” I didn’t think they would be interested, especially since the “coffee” part of their club name seems to be more important than the “library” part. But if they’re willing to help out then I will remember to ask them next time.

And last but not least, there is a beautiful carnivorous garden that has recently been closed. Professor Zuma asked us to help out. It seems the gardener, Natofo, is his family. And Professor Zuma often goes to the garden to escape the celestial horde reading his mind, though not sure what that is all about. Something has gone amiss with some of the new feed for the plants. The new feed were oozes, and while edible by the plants, some combinations of ooze and plant are not ideal and the oozes were hanging around too long and becoming a menace to visitors and plants alike. We found the wayward oozes and took care of them. The last one is in the garbage pit, as long as Natofo is careful to not allow the garbage pit to fill up the ooze is trapped and will help out to get rid of any garbage, so it is allowed to stay around for a bit, if it can be managed safely.

Let’s hope the next couple of weeks will be as much fun as these last weeks!
