Session 2 - (Dis)orientation
July 27th, 2025 — Meera Dunyenya
Day 3 - evening
Our cohort got a task from Esi for the Tempest-Sun mages. Some gremlins, more specifically pugwampi’s, had taken up residence in one of the campus food stores, and we were to remove them without doing them permanent harm. I bought some silver bells, and we borrowed another set from the campus quarter master. Rib was able to negotiate with them to move them back to the jungle, but they do like their misfortune. While Rib and I who had the silver bells were pretty okay, both Faran and Matuas slipped on mud multiple times when we transported them to the jungle. They walked into a door that just opened, got flour on them from a miller who slipped, and more of such nonsense. I’m glad I’m back in my room, not having to take bath.
One last thing, the pugwampi’s were sent by someone called Kurshkin, who was told by a scary ghost. I hope this doesn’t turn into a recurring theme.
Day 4 - late night
I’m tired and it’s been a long day, but fun. Today we were sent on a quest by Mariama (and Chizire) for the Cascade Bearers. We had to get scarlet cap oil, caterpillar oil and bone oil from lucky bones. They gave us good instructions so we were able to succeed in time. The only big interruption was a fight with a mycoid, who made most of us sick. Luckily the Academy has a good medical post to help us overcome the infection.
Afterwards we performed a new ritual designed by Mariama and some other students called Fey abeyance, which should keep fey out of a food store room while it is in effect.
Day 5 - even later at night
Today we had to bring the mail around for the Emerald Boughs, as a task given by Ignaci and Strands of Glowing Dawn Tzeniwe. Lots of running around and talking to people. In the end we still needed a bit of help from Ignaci and Tzeniwe because we needed 5 different types of magic to be cast on a letter at the same time so it would reach the gods, as the sender believes.
Day 6 - noon
I’m still tired from all the running around, and today we have a task given by Okoro and Noxolo, for the Uzunjati, the storytellers. Okoro and Noxolo will listen to our stories and tell us what we should improve on. At the moment I’m thinking about what to tell them. Probably something about how we saved the little chicks at the beginning of the week, but how?
Day 6 - evening
Noxolo and Ignaci and some of the other older students went shopping with some of our cohort, because tomorrow morning we should present ourselves, well-dressed, at the Speaker’s Stage for Teacher Ot and to meet some of the other teachers.
Day 7 - end of the morning, on a medical bed again…
It was supposed to be a nice morning. Not necessarily easy because I’d meet many new people, but it wasn’t supposed to end on a medical bed. Remember that Kurshkin that the pugwampi’s were talking about? He and some crustacean fey decided to attack us at the Speaker’s Stage when the teachers were not there yet. We were quite unfortunate, and this time we were not saved by the bells. In the end by calling out loud for help Teacher Ot came running and Kurshkin and his minion scampered off. But now we’re in bed again. From now on, unless I know that I’m staying in school or the library, I’ll go around with more than 1 Heal spell, until we can prove to ourselves that we won’t die from some random small critters.
