Session 3 - First classes & combat practice

August 16th, 2025 — Meera Dunyenya

The main focus of my studies will be from the Rain Scribes faction. Besides matching well with the experiences I have from before college, I also like that they’re called “The Explorers”. I definitely want to explore new parts of the Mwangi that I haven’t seen before. My first classes are going pretty well I think.

We, as a cohort, are also getting to know our sister cohort in Spire dormitory better. Rib and Matuas helped Anchor Root finding her lost chicken. And Rib also helped Haibram to be a high flyer. I guess it helps to have a well trained body, maybe I should also go on a run every morning just like Esi.

Today we got volunteered to help Teacher Zuma with research. In order to do that we got tattooed with a small face on our arm, which I really hope is temporary. Also who thought it was a good idea to shave part of an Amurrun? It itches like there is no tomorrow. In the end Teacher Zuma didn’t really get the results he wanted, but there was an effect: we could talk to each other through the tattoo up to 120ft, as long as you still see the other person.

I think I’m doing well on the paper I’m supposed to write, I’ve got my outline and can now start to fill it in.

Another day, another assignment from a professor. This time Teacher Koride asked us to figure out where a couple of bug swarms are coming from, especially a venomous centipede swarm. After investigating a couple of locations Matuas noticed there is a powerful magical effect hiding in the background magic noise of the Magaambya. Some of the swarms are even behaving in a way resembling magical characters. I thought Matuas was a decent guy, but pushing me into the water to get a couple of quick laughs from some spectators on the other side tells me he is more immature on the inside than his usual calm demeanor shows.

Tomorrow is the day that the leshies are finally done building whatever they’ve been building, and one of the teachers returns to give some impromptu combat class that everybody is sort-of required to attend.
I’m now writing after Rib and I just returned from the first round of combat. We probably had the easier combat with only 1 opponent, but we did manage to default the leshy in its giant armor with shield. Matuas and Faran are now going in, good luck! Oh no, they have 2 opponents indeed, and one of them just knocked Faran unconscious. Matuas is trying, but it doesn’t look like he can finish the combat and still save Faran, so the leshies win and we get to save Faran in time.

No! My paper! I thought I was working in the right direction, but one of my earliest arguments turned out to be wrong, now I have to redo the whole thing. I hope they allow me to pass this year if I fail to make it up. Months of work down the drain! I guess that will be half nights of sleep for the next quarter to make up for it…
